About the Project
Punk Lives (2019)
This project was a collaboration with artist and friend, Matthew Trujillo. The 10’x10′ mural represents the coalescence of female empowerment and the punk movement as a tribute to the Epix docuseries, ‘Punk’. During SXSW, on March 14th and 15th, 2019, Rolling Stone presented ‘Rolling Stone Live: Austin’ at the Native Hostel. The event featured live performances, panel discussions, and the live painting of ‘Punk Lives’. The mural features an abstract depiction of Debbie Harry, the lead singer of the American band Blondie.
About ‘Punk’:
‘Punk’ is a four-part docuseries from executive producer John Varvatos. Varvatos brings his passion and deep connection to the roots of the punk movement to the series, partnering with filmmaker Derik Murray’s Network Entertainment to produce the quintessential story of punk. Featuring original interviews with America’s punk pioneers and the U.K.’s most notorious bands, alongside a seamless blend of rare and unseen photos, gritty archival film and video, a crackling soundtrack of punk hits and misses, ‘Punk’ explores the music, the fashion, the art and the DIY attitude of a subculture of self-described misfits and outcasts.
About Rolling Stone Live:
The first day featured Music Genesis, a performance by Valley Maker — a.k.a. Austin Crane, a Seattle-based songwriter — and a special screening of a new series celebrating the musical legacy of Seattle. Afterward, director Austin Wilson and Rolling Stone editor Joe Hudak discussed the film series. Friday night’s event was the Emerging Music Showcase, featuring sets from Durand Jones & the Indications, Chai, as well as Charly Bliss, Taylor Janzen, the Beths.
