DAY 8 OF 30 : Yoga con amor

By October 23, 2015 No Comments

DAY  9  OF  30

unnamedYoga Con Amor is nestled in The Spectrum Shopping Center on Burnet Rd. and is known for offering classes designed for all ages, body types, and experience levels. Truly a yoga studio for Everyone.

The studio is charming and I couldn’t help but notice the “intention board” on the studio walls where students write and share their intentions. Every yogi needs to be encouraged to share and manifest their goals.

“I am originally from Puerto Rico, but have called Austin home since 2005. I was a personal trainer and fitness instructor for over 10 years and loved it, but grew curious and wanted more. I wanted to better understand people as humans. Both the body and mind. Through extensive training and practice I became a yogi, and my life was changed forever… I am continually exploring philosophy and phycology as well as studying anatomy and asana. I love helping my students breathe and calm the chatter of the mind, all while getting strong and healthy. I have been a faithful yoga practitioner since 2003, and now feel privileged to be able to share my knowledge and love of yoga with my students. I am trained in Hatha, Vinyasa ,Child Yoga, and Power Yoga and also teach guided meditation. I believe that when you do work to better yourself, in turn you better the people around you”.

Zuzu: Where did you come up with the name Yoga Con Amor? What does it mean to you?

Eliz: I came up with name “Yoga Con Amor” for the studio, based on the intention we put out to our students. Approachable, lovingly guided classes that Everyone feels comfortable attending.

Zuzu: Share with our readers what it’s like owning and running a business with your mom.

Eliz: I run the studio on my own. My mom helps me with front desk work every once in a while in the evenings, so that I can be there for my two boys. But she is there to help me. I am the one running the entire operation.

Zuzu: How did you first get involved in yoga, when did you decide to be a teacher, and what has the journey looked like along the way?

Eliz: I first got introduced to yoga when I was a personal trainer. One of my clients wanted me to incorporate some of the poses and stretches into our routine. The experience was humbling, and challenged me in a way nothing ever had before. I was instantly hooked.  After almost 8 years of yoga being just my personal practice, I decided to get certified and become a teacher. It was a choice to share my love with yoga with students and hopefully help them breathe and be more present.

Zuzu: What’s special about Yoga Con Amor? How does it differ from other local studios?

Eliz:

Yoga Con Amor is for everyone. Every person no matter age, shape or physical ability, we have a class for you. I don’t think a studio like that in Austin is easy to come by.  Yoga by nature grows community, as the meaning is to yolk or unite. But most studios around town cater to younger and very athletic students. Which is great, but there are a lot of people who are intimidated by this, who would love to try yoga. We cater to them all.

Zuzu: What’s the best part of owning your own studio?

Eliz: There a lot of wonderful things about owning my own yoga studio. But the best part for me, is being able to keep 100% true to my intentions as a yoga teacher. To not have to compromise the way I want to share yoga with the world.

I am also really grateful for the fact that I have a little room for my kids to read or play while I teach. That is a huge blessing.

Zuzu: Greatest life lesson learned?

Eliz:

as a yoga teacher while I’m teaching, it’s not about me. It’s about the service I provide to my students. To cater to their needs and try to attune myself to what best helps them. It’s selfless.

Zuzu: Yoga is. ….

Eliz: breath, calm, strong, and present
